Injustice
I personally have never experienced or observed an injustice
in person. In my social work class we have been watching movies and
documentaries about segregation and oppression among African American’s. It
upset me when I saw people yelling and cussing at African Americans for
absolutely no reason. In the 60’s there were people who had signs that had the
N word written all over it, saying they would never want to be in the same
school as someone who is African American. There were an abundance of police brutality
and arrests for no reason, just because of the color of their skin. There was
footage of lynching’s, mobs, protests, all over the color of someone’s skin.
One child got beaten up so bad that he was unrecognizable due to his face being
swollen from the beatings. That should never of happened in the first place. When
I was watching that I just felt sad and helpless, like there was no reason for
someone to get treated that way just because you look different on the outside.
We are all humans at the end of the day, not one person is more superior than
the next in my eyes. I have thought to myself what would I do if I were walking
and saw some people picking on or being racist to anybody, not just African
American. I know that I would stick up for them and have their back. BUT, if I
saw people getting physically bullied like pushed around, I am stepping in and
reciprocating back. When I saw the footage of a helpless African American being
beaten and pushed by a group of white kids, I remember my adrenaline pumping
through my body and I had this sense of anger and wanting to be there so I can
fight those kids. Obviously I cant go around fighting everyone who is being
bullied like that (although sometimes I think it should be that way). Although
discrimination is still a thing today I do not understand why and wish I could
sit down with a bunch of people who are racist, homophobic, sexist, and figure
out WHY they are like that because it doesn’t make sense to me how anyone can
be that negative to another person. You don’t have to like every person you
meet, but there is absolutely no reason why someone should have these negative
feelings to anybody just because they are different than you.

Thanks for this post Gunner and for sharing some of the tension you feel/ imagine about reacting with anger or violence to injustice. I'm going to share the same thing I shared with Ashlee: I cannot imagine that you have never experienced or witnessed an injustice! You have never been treated unfairly? Or seen others treated unfairly? Injustice can be connected to race, gender identity, but also to class, dis/ability, authority, age, etc. I would recommend creating some quiet space to think about this and comb through memories--it feels really important to be able to make these connections as a youth worker.
ReplyDeleteI would love to sit down with people who oppress others and find out why too. I think it would provide closure in my life.
